Was my last working day at Frappe.
After four amazing years of my career, it is time for the next chapter. A chapter I am very excited about. A chapter that is both exhilarating and daunting at the same time: Entrepreneurship.
Before Frappe
My professional career started as a part time TA for this Python programming masterclass on Udemy. My job was to answer questions/doubts in the QnA section of the course. It paid hourly and was a nice side gig alongside my college! The bonus effect of this was that I ended up getting pretty good at writing Python in a year or so 😁
Towards the end of my first year of college (100% online), I realised the curriculum only covered basic stuff that I could learn in a day from Udemy, so I started looking for internships that could give me some hands-on experience. After numerous rejections (stupid me applied to AWS, Redhat, etc. 🤣) and near misses, I posted my resume to our college's slack channel and waited for something to show up. After a few weeks, I got a DM that changed everything.
Journey @ Frappe
The DM was from Ankush Menat. Ankush was my college mate and he had recently joined Frappe. He suggested me to apply and see if I could get in as an Engineer intern. In the February of 2021, I started my journey as an intern at Frappe. My plan was to learn "real-world" app development, gain some experience, and be on my way. But obviously that is not how it turned out to be 😁
Right after my onboarding, I got to work in the ERPNext team with Rucha and here is my first PR on the app. During this time, I noticed Frappe Cloud team doing cool stuff and was very curious on how it all worked. Within a few weeks, I shifted to FC team and worked with them for about 1.5 years. I have shared my experience working on FC in this detailed blog. Also, I got the chance to give my first conference talk ever.
While working on FC, I fell in love with Frappe Framework and apps. I wanted more people to know about it, so I created a twitter X account and started posting memes like these:
After moving out of Frappe Cloud, I was looking for my next project and around the same time, APF had reached out to us for helping them build an MIS platform. They were collaborating with a few partner organisations for a homeless care program in the cities of Bangalore and Chennai. They wanted to build a reusable MIS app that could be deployed pan-India in future.
Umair and I visited Bangalore to learn more about the service operations on-ground and to meet the end-users:
After a few months, we had Frappe Changemakers, an open source beneficiary management app built on Frappe Framework. As of today, it is being used to manage thousands of beneficiaries. While building Changemakers, I fell in love with Frappe Framework, again.
The Spark 💥
I wanted to desperately share some cool stuff we can do with Frappe Framework. So, I wrote my first Frappe tutorial ever:
I enjoyed it so much that within the coming few weeks I wrote five more such blogs! Around the same time, I also took over Frappe Framework training and certification program. The combined effect of these two eventually made me take up a full time Product Evangelist role.
BWH Series
What was supposed to be a "just one live stream" experiment turned out to be a weekly series with thousands of subscribers! I had found my sweet spot and things started to fall in place: international bootcamps, new courses on Frappe School, live product releases, collaboration with the broader FOSS community, and much more! Exciting times.

My First Business
Let's take a slight detour here. Almost everyone in my family does business. My father owns a poultry farm. Before shifting to the city two years ago, we lived at that farm too. When I was about 7-8 years old, I used to collect eggs from the poultry sheds after I was back from school or during weekends. I neatly arranged them in stacked plastic trays containing 30 eggs each:
Then I waited for customers to come. When anyone inquired for eggs, I immediately ran to the front gate and started asking them how many eggs they wanted, then told them about the price. I myself counted those eggs, placed them carefully in a plastic bag (if they wanted only a handful) and calculated the total amount using a simple calculator. I used to make a few hundred rupees like this, but man this was some feeling! This money made me more happy than my pocket money. I didn't get to keep it all since my mother wanted her share for some reason I don't remember now 🤣
This was my first business.
Okay, back to our main track now. Within a year, BWH started to become a brand of its own. The work I did at Frappe also started to feel more independent. It was time, time to be back in business. I knew someday I have to take this step, but did not anticipate it would be this soon. I have decided to work on BWH as a company (BWH Studios) full time. The entrepreneur in me is in full swing. I want to build a great company and provide value to a lot of people. Frappe will always be an inspiration to do so.
First Steps @ BWH Studios
BWH Studios will operate from Jagdalpur (we like to call it our headquarters 😁). Because I have always wanted to build something here, in my hometown. The local engineering talent should not have to leave their home just to find a decent IT job. This is the same reason why we are in-office first.
It has been a month since I started working on BWH Studios full time. Here is the current progress:
- We registered the company and setup ERPNext, Frappe HR, CRM, Raven, etc. (obviously 😁), thanks to Shivam. We are a paying customer of FC now!
- We are about to go-live with our first client project. We will talk more about it at the Frappeverse this year!
- We have started experimenting with new product POCs.
- The entity is profitable on Day 1!
We are now a team of 4 full-time members and 4 interns.
Us during an all-hands meeting, sometimes we watch a movie together :p
Services
I know what your question might be now. What does this company of yours offer? Here are the core services we are offering right now:
- Consultancy: We will guide you to build world-class Frappe based apps and platforms. Let me help you make the most out of the Frappeverse.
- Development: Get best-in-class Frappe custom apps (or integrations) built by our team of developers, including me. Frappe themselves are also a client of ours, btw 😉
- Training: We are an official Frappe School partner. We will help you train your team of devs. We even have a Frappe Framework: Zero to Hero Bootcamp that I am going to soon write a blog on!
- Content: We produce video content (or course) for your open source products.
We don't do ERPNext implementations though 😅
Yo, Frappe Partners, we are not here to compete with you. In fact, we are here to complement you! Want to get apps built for your customers? But don't have bandwidth or expertise? Reach us out and let's work together!
What about #BuildWithHussain?
The show must go on. Mission 1M subscribers still remains. A portion of the revenue through services will go into funding the YT channel. We are even in the look out for a dedicated video editor. Be sure to subscribe if you haven't already, the best is yet to come.
On Open Source
After putting in a lot of thought into what direction I want to take BWH (the YT channel), I have decided to go all in on being the best channel at FOSS content. Frappe + Apps will become a subset of the bigger picture.
Taking up the "Frappe Evangelist" title
One more announcement while we are at it: I will be the first official "Frappe Evangelist" on the planet!
Thank you, Frappe
It has been an honour working with such an amazing team. Before joining Frappe, I never wanted to do a "job". But Frappe's culture made me stay. Frappe's people made me stay. And I stayed. I stayed and learned so much, grew so much. I made good friends. I shipped cool things.
Thank you Frappe for the Freedom to follow my heart.
Onward 🚀
I don't know what the future holds. But the plan is to have fun while also providing value to people (clients, audience, employees).
Thank you everyone who has supported BWH till now. Looking forward to your continued support in this new journey. Don't forget to follow me and our shiny new LinkedIn page to be part of it!
